🚄 How to Book and Board High-Speed Trains

Book, pay for and collect 12306 tickets without the guesswork.

Can foreigners buy train tickets online in China

Three things decide whether this works for you, in the order you hit them: which booking route you can actually get verified on, what you hold at the gate, and the four failures that stop people.

  1. 1

Can you buy online at all: two routes, one trade-off

Yes, and this is the decision that actually matters. The official 12306 app has an English interface and charges no booking fee, but a foreign passport has to pass identity verification first, and that check can take days or stall entirely. Trip.com charges a small service fee and skips the verification because it books on your behalf. The trade-off is time against money, so if you are travelling within a week, the choice is already made for you.

  2. 2

At the station: the passport is the ticket

For most high-speed trips you no longer collect a paper ticket. The document you booked with is the ticket: you swipe it at the automatic gate, then a camera checks your face. On a first trip, give yourself half an hour more than you think you need, because a passport that the gate cannot read sends you to a manned counter, and that queue is the one that makes people miss trains.

  3. 3

When it breaks: four failures, in the order they hit

Almost every train problem is one of four: the 12306 verification never finishes, the name format is rejected because the machine cannot read your passport spelling, the payment fails at checkout on a foreign card, or the passport will not scan at the gate. Each has a free first-step page that starts from what you are looking at right now.

The gate reads the document, not the app. Whichever route you booked through, the only thing that must be in your hand on the day is the passport you booked with. A screenshot will not open it.

You have two main options: the official 12306 app (English version available) or Trip.com (fully English, accepts international cards, no Chinese phone number required).

  • 12306: No booking fee, but requires passport verification first
  • Trip.com: Small service fee, but no verification needed
If you're in a hurry, use Trip.com. The verification process on 12306 can take days.

Enter your full name and passport number exactly as they appear on your passport. Order matters — family name first, given name second.

  • Use exactly the spelling from the passport's machine-readable zone
  • No hyphens, no extra spaces, no middle names unless on the passport
Common problem: If your name is entered incorrectly, you may be denied boarding.

12306 accepts Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Alipay, and WeChat Pay — but NOT Amex or UnionPay International. Trip.com accepts Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Alipay, and WeChat Pay.

  • Turn off browser autofill and manually enter card details
  • If a card fails, try Alipay or WeChat Pay instead
  • Trip.com has more payment options and fewer failures
Common problem: 12306 payment transactions fail about 12% of the time.

← Manual Verification Lane

If the automatic gate rejects your passport:

  • Look for the "Staff Assistance" sign
  • Show your passport and e-ticket to staff
  • Allow 30–60 minutes before departure

Your passport is your ticket. Arrive at the station at least 30-60 minutes early for security checks.

  • Your passport is your ticket — no paper ticket needed
  • Many foreign passports don't have RFID chips that work with automatic gates
  • Look for the staffed lane if the automatic gate rejects you
Tip: Arrive early. If you need the manual lane, it can add 10-15 minutes.
